A tight, chase-based ripper, 21 Bridges feels like something the great Sidney Lumet ( Serpico ; Dog Day Afternoon ; Prince of the City ) would have made back in the 1970s.
In its attempt to combine various heist flicks and classics like Serpico and Infernal Affairs with 'big themes', it lacks the focus to maintain a gripping momentum.
Like the latter in countless private and police detective dramas, everything from Deja Vu to Fallen , Inside Man to Training Day , Boseman has a cool intensity that fills the screen and an ability to make both the action scenes look convincing (here the main set-piece is a chase along the streets and the subway) and the dialogue riveting.
