Born free in the American West, Black Beauty is a horse rounded up and brought to Birtwick Stables, where she meets spirited teenager Jo Green. The two forge a bond that carries Beauty through the different chapters, challenges and adventures.

What critics compared Black Beauty to
Taken on its own, precision-targeted, terms, this Disney + release hits the marks for old-fashioned family entertainment, with a distinguished bloodline from National (and International ) Velvet on through to Born Free and a sensibility which chimes with the Mouse House’s live-action brand of old.
Then again, it’s also possible that editing is simply so bad that it’s impossible what to make of it other than that it’s a sloppy bore that feels more like it’s using the template of A Dog’s Purpose than repurposing the actual source material.
Likewise, writer-director Ashley Avis ( Adolescence , The Trouble With Mistletoe ) has retained original author Anna Sewell’s episodic trawl through owners kind and mean, but reframed things so that it’s more a kind of gee-geed up Nicholas Sparks-meets- A Dog’s Purpose .
