There are echoes of Steven Knight’s ingenious thriller Locke, a film that pushed us to the edge of our seats via Tom Hardy’s string of relatively mundane yet breathlessly tense car calls or Michael Mann’s Collateral where Jamie Foxx’s cab driver is forced into a violent partnership with Tom Cruise’s backseat assassin.
Any taxi-set film following in the footsteps of Michael Mann’s killer-in-a-cab thriller Collateral has big shoes to fill. Unfortunately, first-time writer-director Christy Hall takes us on a tiresomely familiar ride through regressive ideas about relationships, and it’s painful to watch seasoned actors Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn portray stereotypes and deliver dated dialogue.
