Although Kevin Costner was a hot commodity when he embarked upon 'Revenge' at the end of the eighties, he seemed, on this occasion, to allow his bankability to run ahead of his judgment (not counting Waterworld which was to come five years later).
Ten minutes in and Revenge is the most carefully curated male fantasy since Garden State—but unlike its Zach Braff predecessor, it seems to know it.
Movies like Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, Ms. 45, and Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof come to mind. First-time French director Coralie Fargeat’s stylish new rape-payback thriller, Revenge, fits into that latter category with pulpy panache.
New directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, best known for Norway’s 2012 foreign language Oscar nominee Kon-Tiki, mostly follow the franchise rulebook in spinning out the jokey (but not terribly sexy) Carina-Henry romance and staging the heavily-choreographed action. Mildly bawdy gags punctuate the piece, making Dead Men feel at times like a Carry On comedy.
