What critics compared Cats to
There, they find staff members dressed as Cats, a vending machine with a virus, and a whole planet of monsters trying to break in.
But these ostensibly playful metaphors can ring hollow, or go rancid quite quickly. (You might remember Tom Hooper trying to push Cats as a warning about the perils of tribalism.)
I found it challenging to connect with characters such as the Cowardly Lion, voiced by Colman Domingo, who looks about as convincing as the felines in Cats (2019).
For every “Wicked,” inspired by the long-running stage show based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, there is a “Cats,” “Rock of Ages,” or “Dear Evan Hansen.”
Not since “Cats” has there been a more misguided yet enterprising work of big-budget, intellectual property cinema.
