Directed by Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl, Fright Night, I, Tonya), Cruella is pretty lengthy at 2 hours and 14 minutes, and the plot goes on to describe a secret from Cruella's past, her transformation from the good "Estella" to the Cruella de Vil we all know and loathe, and many little origin-style tidbits that lead right up to the beginning of 101 Dalmatians.
Supporting performances by Joel Fry and Paul Walter Houser (who gave a terrific performance for Gillespie in 2017’s I, Tonya ) as Jasper and Horace respectively, Cruella’s accomplices, and Mark Strong as Paul the Valet (in a role strongly reminiscent of Stanley Tucci’s role in 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada ) are excellent.
The new movie Cruella , directed by I, Tonya filmmaker Craig Gillespie and out this Friday in theaters and on Disney+, purports to explain how she became the “inhuman beast” we know from her theme song, and the results are mixed.
Director Craig Gillespie’s last film was I, Tonya , which proves to be an unlikely companion piece to Cruella , another tale of two women of different generations pitted against each another.
(Seriously, director Craig Gillespie, who previously maxed out his music budget to an embarrassing degree with 2017′s I, Tonya, soundtracks his action here with Supertramp, the Rolling Stones, Joe Tex, the Zombies and Nancy Sinatra … all within the first 30 minutes.
