What critics compared Wish Upon to
Working from a lackluster script by Barbara Marshall (“Viral”), director John R. Leonetti targets a younger audience than with his R-rated “ Annabelle ,” in what amounts to an unsatisfying combination of “Final Destination” and “The Box.”
Leonetti's new movie resembles "The Monkey's Paw" and the "Final Destination" films much more than "Annabelle."
Director John R. Leonetti turns that sequence into a little symphony of hyped-up suspense that owes something to the “Final Destination” pictures.
There’s a dash of the Final Destination films here too and Leonetti clearly revels in sculpting operatic set pieces wherein the box causes fate to tear innocent people apart as its required “blood sacrifice.”
But I have to admit, when you give me a story with engaging characters, real stakes, some Final Destination-esque kill setups, and a willingness by director John R. Leonetti to push his PG-13 rating to the very limits, I’m pretty much game for anything.
If so, it is because I wished for that, and now one of you reading this will die terribly in a cheesy Final Destination -esque way.
Pressing gently on the bruise of a broken home to explain Clare’s addiction to the evil receptacle (in a move that recalls “The Possession” a few years back), Barbara Marshall’s zippy script cuts corners without severing its bond to Clare’s emotions.
Jeff Wadlow’s Truth Or Dare is an inconsequential brand of horror likened to Stiles White’s Ouija or more recently John R. Leonetti’s Wish Upon.
It's definitely not a horror movie for everyone, but to give you an idea of what to expect, Truth or Dare feels like a 2018 version of Wish Upon , which is completely my kind of jam (and I’m totally cool with being in the minority here).
