Neither does the film’s finale, which is a ripoff of “Skyfall.”
Yet even with these missed opportunities, Alvarez’s version of Salander is far more of a fleshed out character than male action peers like ‘Mission: Impossible‘ hero Ethan Hunt or Bond (with the possible exception of “Skyfall,” a thematically similar movie involving a destructive visit home).

You may recall that Rooney Mara was nominated for an Oscar for playing the same part in David Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and wanted back in, but director Fede Álvarez wanted to find his own Lisbeth.
It pales when compared to the much superior American remake of the original 2009 Swedish version by the great David Fincher– “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” (2011).
In the last decade, we’ve seen several cinematic adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s novels about notorious hacker Lisbeth Salander, including the magnificent “Millennium Trilogy” starring Noomi Rapace, and David Fincher’s American remake of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig.
Directed and co-written by Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Alvarez (happier with the equally murky Evil Dead remake and the sleeper hit Don’t Breathe ), this has Foy filling in as Lisbeth Salander in place of Noomi Rapace (from the Swedish film series) and Rooney Mara (in the ill-fated American remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo ).
Leaping over the direct literary sequels from late Swedish novelist Stieg Larsson that would’ve logically followed Fincher’s 2011 film and comprised a trilogy, new director and co-writer Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe, the Evil Dead remake) looks for inspiration in the lesser literary reboot from author David Lagercrantz.
Alvarez (the superior shocker "Don't Breathe"), who also had a hand in writing the screenplay, borrows the chilly atmosphere from the first film, accentuated by a steely blue color scheme that coats everything with ice.
For the next addition in the Millennium saga, Larsson, Fincher and Mara are all gone, here the latter two replaced by Fede Alvarez ( Don’t Breathe ) and Claire Foy (TV’s The Crown ), working off prose written by David Lagercrantz, a fellow Swede who continued Larsson’s work following permission from his literary estate.
So by the time The Girl in the Spider’s Web director Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe, Evil Dead) had been hired, the studio decided to skip the next two instalments and turned to the fourth book to restart the franchise.
Director Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe) and his co-writers Jay Basu (Monsters: Dark Continent) and Steven Knight (November Criminals) have changed significant details in order to make the story more cinematic, and this is both a benefit and a detriment.
A few flashbacks and one key character aside, however, director Fede Alvarez (maker of home-invasion thriller Don’t Breathe ) is more interested in letting Foy’s Lisbeth rip as an action heroine.
“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Iron Man 2” both spastically crawled while attempting to set up different cinematic universes, watering down their own plots and characters in the process.
