What critics compared Those Who Wish Me Dead to
Jettisoning the moral tensions of his “Frontier Trilogy” to a fault, this is typical action-thriller fare that recalls the bygone era of Peter Weir’s Witness or Ron Howard’s Backdraft , and the film offers base thrills we’ve all seen time and time again; but where the story lacks in meat on its bones, it more than makes up for with its character work.
It doesn’t match the finely etched characterizations and contemplative writing of his original screenplay for Hell or High Water , but even if the genre quilting isn’t entirely seamless, it’s a ruggedly entertaining throwback to studio movies of the ’90s about real people navigating hairy life-or-death situations.
That’s as inevitable as the intersection of the film’s two plotlines, which Sheridan pulls together less gradually then he did the parallel threads of his Oscar-nominated screenplay for Hell Or High Water .
As directed by Taylor Sheridan, “Those Who Wish Me Dead” offers a much bigger sandbox for the gifted actor-turned-action maven; his scripts for “Sicario” and “Hell or High Water” have launched him to the front of a genre dominated by CG robots, superheroes and other IP once associated with Saturday-morning cartoons.
Adhering to a similar action efficiency of his penned Sicario , though not quite as emotionally rousing as his own Wind River or near-note perfect Hell Or High Water , Taylor Sheridan‘s Those Who Wish Me Dead is nonetheless a strong continuation of his brand of modifying the western genre.
Directed by Taylor Sheridan, who gets a free pass for life for writing “Hell or High Water,” and starring Angelina Jolie (sort of), it’s a film about a smokejumper trying to overcome tragedy.
