Echoes of Andrzej Zulawski’s Possession and the novels of John Wyndham and Jack Finney haunt Leigh Janiak’s otherworldly chiller about newlyweds holed up in a cabin in the woods.
Instead, director Leigh Janiak teams up with her Honeymoon co-writer to create an entirely new story, the first part of which lands on the streaming platform this Friday.
And for a while there, it looks as if up-and-coming director Leigh Janiak, whose credits include 2014’s Honeymoon and helmed two episodes in Scream: The TV Series , knows what it takes to make an entertaining throwback to the ’90s slasher film.

More importantly, it marks a return to feature film directing for Leigh Janiak, who made her debut with the weird, creepy Honeymoon in 2014 and has only directed television since.
The trio of films, which were all directed and co-written by Honeymoon ’s Leigh Janiak, are based on a series of R.L. Stine novels aimed at an older (which is to say, teenage) audience, and were originally slated to be part of an R-rated theatrical gamble at 20th Century Fox.
To the most seasoned horror geeks in the house, Janiak’s success here may not be as much of a surprise, as her underrated 2014 debut Honeymoon starring Rose Leslie was a deeply unnerving and tightly directed clinic on suspense, with no shortage of gross-out payoff.
