It’s directed by Chris Wedge, whose animated “Ice Age” movies have been serving that same function for years.
There’s certainly nothing on screen that’s as fascinating as the off-screen stalling and financial brawling behind the first live-action effort from Ice Age’s Chris Wedge; however the family-friendly attempt to turn giant, gas-guzzling, car-controlling amphibious creatures into cute, loveable critters isn’t quite the mess its many delays may make it seem.
Director Chris Wedge, best known for animated movies like “Ice Age” and “Robots,” switches to live action for MONSTER TRUCKS.
There are three 'story by' credits on "Monster Trucks" (screenplay by "Jurassic World's" Derek Connolly), a movie cooked up by a former Paramount chief and his four year old that can best be described as the poor man's "Pete's Dragon" by way of the "Love Bug." Director Chris Wedge ("Ice Age") makes the leap from animation to live action (the film was originally planned as an animation) and gets surprisingly committed performances from his surprisingly recognizable ensemble, but any sense of real world logic and spatial integrity have been jettisoned.

It should come as no surprise that the premise for Paramount’s Monster Trucks, the live-action bow of Ice Age helmer Chris Wedge, came directly from the mind of a four-year-old.
With no oversight entered into by any higher ups, we have a messy screenplay by Derek Connolly (Jurassic World), squeezed from a story credited to two teams consisting of three people; it’s no surprise that it’s a heavily derivative script, but that it borrows so liberally from Transformers: Age of Extinction would be something approaching criminal if you didn’t know that it was shot months before that movie was released in 2014.
Andrew Stanton was less successful in taking time between “Wall-E” and “Finding Dory” to make “John Carter.”
“Monster Trucks” marks Wedge’s live-action debut, and like other directors who’ve hailed from the animation sphere (including “John Carter” helmer Andrew Stanton and “The Chronicles of Narnia’s” Andrew Adamson), he seems overwhelmed by the transition, resulting in exaggerated acting and clunky staging.
