Straight-arrow policewoman Cooper is excited and thrilled about her next assignment. Her task is to escort Daniella Riva, a wisecracking Colombian beauty, from San Antonio to Dallas so both she and her husband can testify against a drug lord. Plans go awry when Mr. Riva gets ambushed, leaving Daniella a widow. Cooper and her witness must now use their wits to escape from crooked cops and murderous gunmen, while not killing each other in the process.

Directed by Anne Fletcher, whose sins against entertainment include “27 Dresses” and “The Proposal,” “Hot Pursuit” stars Reese Witherspoon (who produced) as a klutzy San Antonio police officer named Cooper and Sofia Vergara (who executive produced) as Daniella Riva, a drug-lord’s wife being ferried to Dallas to testify against her husband’s boss (Joaquin Cosio).

Here, the generally drab pacing comes as a bit of a shock, too, since director Anne Fletcher has done solid work on that front in the past: She directed the winning rom-coms The Proposal and 27 Dresses, as well as the first Step Up.
Director Anne Fletcher mustered enjoyable mismatched-partner momentum in “The Proposal” and “The Guilt Trip,” but that modest magic eludes her in a film that feels like one modest cleavage-covered catfight after another.
Written by sitcom scribes David Feeney ("New Girl") and John Quaintance ("Whitney"), and directed by rom-com veteran Anne Fletcher ( "27 Dresses," "The Proposal" ), "Hot Pursuit" is shrill, broad, and nonsensical, full of dumb details like Cooper, a lifelong Texas girl, not recognizing a longhorn when she sees one.
To see the film is to question whether Witherspoon or Vergara have any real comic chops, and it would be very easy to use this film and a few other recent titles in their ouvre (Reese has This Means War and Four Christmases, Vergara has everything that’s not Chef) to make that case.
She was enjoyable in “Chef,” for instance.
She's been somewhat reserved in Jon Favreau's Chef and earlier this year in Wild Card, but here she cranks the volume up to 11.
