What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: The ex-con-befriends-a-kid plot resembles that of grossly underrated Nicolas Cage/David Gordon Green film Joe , with echoes of About a Boy and Sling Blade .
While boasting a very similar plot and southern setting to 2013 Nicolas Cage-starrer Joe , Palmer is a quieter, gentler movie.
I was reminded by what David Gordon Green did with his film “Joe,” in matching Nicolas Cage with little known or untrained actors.
Make of that what you will, but I can’t help thinking of Ben Stiller’s “Zoolander,” in which a fashion designer shows off his new clothing line called “Derelicte.”
Like other directors of his generation, (see David Gordon Green and his film “Joe,” for an example), Nichols was presumably raised watching movies from the 1980s.
