What critics compared Rio 2 to
"Rio 2" traverses the importance of family and learning to appreciate the simple pleasures in life?in this way it is a lot like 2010's " Grown Ups ," of all movies?but it comes off as disingenuous and never goes deep enough to build any lasting dramatic substance.
In loosely adapting for the big screen the life of famed showman P. T. Barnum, director Michael Gracey (making a dazzling directorial debut) and screenwriters Jenny Bicks (2014's " Rio 2 ") and Bill Condon (2006's " Dreamgirls ") have crafted a pair of quite literally soaring love stories set against the backdrop of the museum-turned-sideshow business Barnum created.
Working from a screenplay by Jenny Bicks (“Rio 2”) and Bill Condon (“Dreamgirls”), Gracey channels the spirit of classic movie musicals while hedging his bets with wildly anachronistic pop songs by “La La Land” Oscar winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
