Canadian horror filmmaker Vincenzo Natali ("Cube," " Splice ") is at his best when he's turning his stories into mazes.
Cult director Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Splice ) has come up with an unusual, refreshing take on a typical ghost story.
A nifty little reverse-ghost story, it is very much true to the form of the brilliant Canadian director of Cube, Cypher, and Splice: impeccably constructed, tightly focused, and fascinated with the details of its Twilight Zone-ish conceit.
The director of ingenious, high concept doodles like "Cube," "Cypher," and, most importantly, the envelope pushing, outrageously underrated "Splice," can literally go anywhere or do anything.
But this director of “Cube” and the bigger, bonkers “Splice” scales the ambitions of his new movie appropriately, even cautiously.
Nothing is all that spooky, at least not initially, besides the fact that the house is surrounded by a soupy white fog reminiscent of Frank Darabont's "The Mist," which prevents all of the family members from leaving the house.
Concocting a story that feels like a cross between “The Lovely Bones” and 2009’s little-seen “Triangle,” Natali has made impressively literal use of teenage ennui, physically confining his disaffected heroine to her boring life at the point of her life during which she most yearns for escape.
