From voice mannerisms to body language, Fassbender commands the screen with a pitch perfect villainous performance, the kind that reminds of Anthony Hopkins turn as Hannibal Lectors in The Silence of the Lambs , where intellect and bad intentions meet in perfect fusion.
Co-written by John Logan, who last worked with Scott on Gladiator , the movie makes an atmosphere of gothic and romantic references: Shelley, Byron, The Phantom Of The Opera , Das Rheingold , The Silence Of The Lambs , the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, an alien city seemingly inspired by the imaginary architecture of Étienne-Louis Boullée.

I personally hold Damon Lindelof responsible; he and frequent collaborator J.J. Abrams have rigid hard-ons for introducing mysteries that they never even come close to paying off competently ( Lost , Cloverfield , Star Trek Into Darkness , Star Wars: The Force Awakens , Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk , etc).
In so doing, they revive a moribund franchise in much the same way The Force Awakens reignited the Star Wars saga, by reconjuring characters and themes from the past.
Like Prometheus or Alien: Covenant, it grapples with the psychology of creation and destruction.
