I Am Not a Hipster (2013)

Things are not looking good for Brook, a young, talented singer/songwriter who has become the clichéd tortured artist. Slow to come to terms with the death of his mother, Brook is self-absorbed, aggressive, and the major obstruction to his own career success. His isolation is lifted when his three sisters and estranged father come to spread his mother’s ashes. Brook’s loving sisters have a magical effect on his anger and apathy, suggesting there may be hope for the misanthropic musician after all.

What critics compared I Am Not a Hipster to
Written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton ( I Am Not A Hipster ), it’s inspired by his experiences working in a foster-care facility; the title refers to the fact that most of the kids stay a year or less before being placed elsewhere or released.
There are any number of ways that Cretton (whose best known previous film was 2012’s I Am Not a Hipster ) could have made this material precious or sentimental, but he honors the story by forcing us to come to the characters rather than by underlining everything with close-ups and obvious musical cues.
There is undoubtedly a bad version of "Short Term 12" that writer-director Destin Daniel Cretton ("I Am Not a Hipster") fortunately didn't make.
What Cretton did so well in his first feature, “I Am Not A Hipster,” was hold certain things back so that they were that much more powerful when revealed, and he does that again and again in this script.
(In the interim, he also made last year's I Am Not a Hipster, which received solid reviews from critics and played at Sundance and in limited theatrical release.)
The financing for the full-length film was secured after Cretton’s debut feature I Am Not A Hipster screened at Sundance in 2012.
