The heavily improvised "Song to Song," which was originally called "Lawless" and then "Weightless," harks back to the Arthur Schnitzler play "La Ronde."
And so the filmmaker’s spiritual impulses and aesthetics, forged with “The Tree Of Life,” and cemented with “To The Wonder” and “Knight Of Cups,” have not changed and may never evolve further (though hope springs eternal with his upcoming, not-labored-over WWII movie “Radegund“).
With The Tree of Life, and subsequently To the Wonder, Knight of Cups, and Voyage of Time, the director seemed hell-bent on proving his critics right.
Song to Song is far from his strongest film, but it’s his best and most exciting work since The Tree of Life.
After making “Days of Heaven” in 1978, director Terrence Malick took a two-decade break from cinema, retreating to Austin, Texas, where his latest movie is set (bits of “The Tree of Life” also filmed there).
Like the superior "Knight of Cups," this is a warmer cousin of the cosmic-minded bourgeois dramas that Michelangelo Antonioni ("La Notte") used to make 50 years ago.
In short, Malick has fashioned his own version of Michelangelo Antonioni’s “Eros is sick” trilogy of L’avventura (1960), La Notte (1961), and L’eclisse (1962).
The headiest trip to the movies I had last year was Terrence Malick’s Voyage Of Time: The IMAX Experience , a forty-five minute nature documentary chronicling the history and inevitable collapse of the universe with gobsmacking visual effects, soaring classical music cues and a gloriously stoned voice-over by Brad Pitt, who if you closed your eyes you could imagine was still on the couch in True Romance .
