Belgian filmmaker Felix Van Groeningen’s (The Broken Circle Breakdown, Belgica) English-language debut is very much tonally akin to his efforts in his native tongue.
Belgian Director Felix Van Groeningen (“The Broken Circle Breakdown“) combines those volumes in “Beautiful Boy,” a painfully sincere picture that does its very best to dodge the conventions of the rehab movie – established in “Clean and Sober,” “28 Days,” “Permanent MidnightTIFF and more made-for-TV efforts than you can shake an AA chip at – but never quite forges its own path.
He’s an inspired choice to bring David and Nic Sheff’s story to life given that his international breakout feature, 2013’s The Broken Circle Breakdown , depicts a similarly tragic journey as the illness of a child slowly gnaws away at the sanity of an entire family.
Van Groeningen’s Academy Award-nominated 2012 film The Broken Circle Breakdown effectively conveyed the emotions of a couple in extremis over the fatal illness of a child, and the new pic certainly features many moments of parental distress over what their 18-year-old son is going through with his inexplicable penchant for crystal meth.
Belgian director Felix van Groeningen (“The Broken Circle Breakdown”) makes his English-language debut here, and he has a gift for capturing family intimacy at its most intense.
Felix Van Groeningen, a Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award nominee for The Broken Circle Breakdown collaborated with Luke Davies, a fellow Oscar nominee as the screenwriter of Lion , to blend David Sheff’s Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction and Nic Sheff’s Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines into this single film.
But writer/director Julia Ducournau's eerily shot film (cinematography by Ruben Impens, "The Broken Circle Breakdown") is also highly charged erotica, its heroine's flirtation with cannibalism concurrent with her sexual awakening.
