She’s also poor and living on a rundown housing estate, an environment beloved of a certain strata of French cinema (e.g. Two Of Three Things I Know About Her, Jean-Luc Godard, 1967, La Haine, Mathieu Kassovitz, 1995; District 13, Pierre Morel, 2004).
“Rodeo,” at least on the surface, is more realistic; the movie’s racing and party scenes suggest someone trying to work in the mode of Andrea Arnold’s’s “American Honey.” It’s life-is-shallow/life-is-doom existential storytelling. Yet there’s nothing to the characters but their indifferent surface and the unruly “energy” they occasionally reveal beneath.
