I felt the need to begin this article with those two sentences because "The Hunt," a new horror film directed by Craig Zobel ("Compliance," "Z for Zachariah") and written by Nick Cuse and Damon Lindelof ("Lost," "Star Trek Into Darkness"), tells the story of liberal elites who kidnap 12 conservatives — heavily implied to be Trump supporters since they're often referred to as "deplorables" — in order to hunt them for sport.
This Blumhouse-produced horror is directed by Compliance's Craig Zobel , while the script comes courtesy of Damon Lindelof, the co-creator of Lost and The Leftovers, who collaborates with Leftovers' staff writer Nick Cuse.
Director Craig Zobel doesn’t sustain suspense the way he did in his 2012 feature debut, Compliance, but he sustains the viewer’s attention even when the narrative’s momentum flags during the final third.
The Hunt , cowritten by Lindelof and his former “Lost” partner Carlton Cuse’s son Nick and directed by Compliance helmer Craig Zobel, is a political satire wrapped around the structural spine of “The Most Dangerous Game.”
The premise is less provocative than its writers, Damon Lindelof (creator of Lost and Watchmen) and Nick Cuse (a writer on The Leftovers), and its director, Craig Zobel (Compliance), seem to think it is: A group of “deplorables”—dudes in trucker caps and rumpled flannel shirts, women in pastel exercise outfits, and so forth—are drugged and transported to a remote stretch of wilderness, where they’re hunted like animals by the “elites” who have brought them there.
Instead, director Craig Zobel (Compliance, Z For Zachariah) embraces the comedy, and if viewed as such, audiences are likely to connect it with more so.
This is also the third year in a row that one of his films not only has played at the Sundance Film Festival, but also has been picked up by a distributor there, following "Take Shelter" in 2011 and "Compliance" in 2012.
