What critics compared Miss Bala to
The creative ferment encouraged three directors to start there and spread their wings across the world: Alfonso Cuarón (Y tu mamá tambiėn, the third Harry Potter film), Alejandro González Iñárritu (Amores Perros, 21 Grams, Babel), Guillermo del Toro (Cronos, Pan’s Labyrinth, the Hellboy movies and, for a year or so, before Peter Jackson took it back, The Hobbit).
For gringo moviegoers, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s “Amores perros” seems to be about the only existing reference point for this kind of intense and gritty realism in Mexican cinema.
It calls to mind the tracking shot of Monica Bellucci before the brutal rape scene in the infamous Irreversible.
Her comparative Bond girl screentime may be vastly increased when it comes to Bellucci — and certainly Miss Bala ‘s Stephanie Sigman — but her eventual affection for Bond makes little sense, while the actress’s action chops left more of an impression in Ghost Protocol .
P.S. Speaking of Oscar submissions, Mexican actress Stephanie Sigman, Miss Bala herself, plays one of the divers wives and speaks Norwegian in the film.
