But for Besson devotees who sat stoically through "The Lady" (or patiently during that endless "Arthur and the Invisibles" series) "Lucy" is a trippy return to form — to mind-twisting stories, to rocket-propelled camerawork, to eyes-wide-open dreams.
French director Luc Besson ("The Lady"/"La Femme Nikita"/"The Fifth Element"), noted for his previous lightweight female action hero thrillers, comes up short with this attempt in creating a super-cool thriller.
He also directed biopics of history's favorite insurgent heroines, Joan of Arc (The Messenger) and Aung San Suu Kyi (The Lady).
The strength of his female characters in physical prowess is exemplified in the likes of Nikita and The Fifth Element , while he’s less successfully leveraged strong emotional and impassioned women in films like The Messenger and The Lady .
Of course, Besson has made bad movies in the past but even in clunkers like “The Family” and “ The Lady ,” he was at least making some kind of discernible effort.
