Broadly directed by Brian Dannelly (Saved!), Struck by Lightning is mainly intent on self-affirmation and forgiveness.
Alas, these would-be screwball shenanigans appear tired or implausible or both, and there's not enough satire in the screenplay for director Brian Dannelly to pull off something as edgy as his 2004 indie "Saved!"
So, following a similar theme found in Alexander Payne’s “ Election ,” but with less darkness and a tad more sadness, director Brian Dannelly is back for only his second feature (after his cult 2004 hit “ Saved! “), although he has been directing episodes for some of television’s more offbeat series, such as “Weeds,” “Pushing Daisies,” and “United States of Tara.”
Director Dannelly's earlier feature, " Saved! " (2004), portrayed a clash between the religious and non-religious students at a Christian high school.
Unfortunately, Colfer’s script, directed by Saved!’s Brian Dannelly, stops short of delivering on its promise, dropping plotlines big and small: For example, Carson agrees to take antidepressants if his mother will finance his publication; after serving their purpose as a narrative device, the question of whether he actually takes them or not is never discussed.
But director Brian Dannelly ( Saved! ) can’t unmoor a first-rate cast of pros – notably Allison Janney as Carson’s boozy divorced mom – from Carson’s orbit of superiority.
