What critics compared Like Crazy to
Director Drake Doremus ("Like Crazy," Breathe In"), whose story was written by Nathan Parker ("Moon"), revisits ideas well known from films like George Lucas‘s "THX 1138" and the recent YA adaptation "The Giver" without adding anything new.
This is not the first time Doremus, best known for his contemporary-set romantic dramas “Like Crazy” (2011) and “Breathe In” (2013), has likened his characters to Romeo and Juliet, and certain myth-minded viewers may also discern shades of Eurydice and Orpheus hovering over the plot.
Which might be one of the reasons the two make such an easy, genuine match in Equals, the new dystopian love story from Like Crazy director Drake Doremus.
Working from a stagnant script by Nathan Parker (“The Moon”), director Drake Doremus (“Like Crazy,” “Breathe In”) formulaically paces the dismal, corporate-conformity allegory.
As with his thin but affecting Like Crazy , director Drake Doremus is better at putting across the emotions of the story than the story itself, which is pretty negligible.
“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” wastes DeHaan, it wastes Felicity Jones (“Like Crazy”) in a tiny role that promises to expand in later chapters, it wastes a way-cool secret laboratory in an abandoned subway station.
If so, then there is a very good chance that you might get something out of "Monday," a tale of amour fou involving two people with the collective intelligence of a jar of pickles that comes startlingly close to making "Like Crazy" almost seem palatable by comparison.
