What critics compared Despicable Me 2 to
In many ways, “Despicable Me 2” plays a lot like an “Ice Age” or “Madagascar” sequel.
They're funny, in a Madagascar penguins or Pizza Planet little green men sort of way, one-joke bit players whose appeal was underestimated before and overestimated now, former scene swipers presently having scenes and ad campaigns handed to them.
Like the penguins of Madagascar, the Minions are destined for their own film, as an end-credits audition sequence indicates.
Dreamworks’ Madagascar and Shrek series may be creatively exhausted, but Universal proves with Despicable Me 2 that Pixar’s animators aren’t the only ones capable of top-quality sequels.
Especially smart on Coffin and Renaud’s part is the extra screen time given to the Minions, who have taken over the penguins of Madagascar and Scrat from Ice Age as the best side characters in animated film today.
Although it’s hard to forget Boris Karloff’s authoritative narration, Pharrell Williams, whose song “Happy” earned Illumination’s Despicable Me 2 an Oscar nomination, lends the storytelling an appropriately soulful vibe as he relays the Grinch’s dastardly plan for the Whos’ holidays.
As Pharrell Williams did with Happy in Despicable Me 2, Justin Timberlake gives Trolls the catchy theme song Can't Stop the Feeling, which will have you smiling and, if you're an 8-year-old, dancing out of the theatre.
All of the characters, in fact, are more clearly defined?the hilarious-even-in-animated-form Kristen Wiig (2013's " Despicable Me 2 ") is given much more to do this time as boy-crazy tomboy Ruffnut?and relationships are more attentively nuanced.
Will it approach the $900m+ successes of Shrek 2 or Despicable Me 2 ?
