What critics compared Here Comes the Boom to
Part Rocky, part Warrior (the 2011 mixed martial arts drama), Boom is a fight film for the family, a feel-good cage match that wears its tattooed heart on its rippling bicep.
The movie has been compared to "Warrior," but its story of a goofball fighting on behalf of children really owes more to "Nacho Libre," ("When you are a man, sometimes you wear stretchy pants.").
It's the combination of Warrior and Mr. Holland's Opus nobody asked for, but here it comes anyway, landing with a thump.
As to the absurdity of the “sport” of mixed martial arts, which is little more than barroom brawling with no biting or broken bottles, this is an improvement on one of the worst films of 2011, “Warrior,” which expected us to take it seriously.
The schoolteacher-moonlighting-in-MMA character also appeared in last year's male weepie Warrior , played by Joel Edgerton , though Boom invests further in the fix-our-failing-schools issue making the rounds: Call it Waiting for Superman Punch.
Salute the guy who suffers for his cause, but Scott’s far from an admirable do-gooder or even a conflicted bruiser like Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton’s characters in last year’s “Warrior.”
It delivers exactly what’s expected from a flabby mishmash of high school inspirational tale and Mixed Martial Arts fighting exhibitionism ladled out by Adam Sandler running mate Frank Coraci (Zookeeper, Click, The Waterboy) and schlubby everyman and UFC fan James (Paul Blart: Mall Cop and TV’s King of Queens).
"Boom" is no masterpiece but compared with "Click" or its ilk it's amazing so many of the same people are responsible for both.
“Here Comes the Boom,” for instance, was directed by Frank Coraci of Click and The Zookeeper, was written by Allan Loeb , the worst screenwriter in Hollywood (or at least, the most prolific bad screenwriter1), and takes as its title a 2001 Christian Nu Metal song by POD .
"Here Comes the Boom" was directed by Frank Coraci (2006's " Click ") and penned by Kevin James, Rock Reuben, and Allan Loeb (2012's " Rock of Ages "), the moral of their story being that it's never too late to turn things around and achieve what is thought to be the near-impossible.
Even director Frank Coraci, who gave us the aforementioned “Zookeeper” and the massive misfire “Around the World in 80 Days,” had some decent flicks with “The Wedding Singer” and “Click.”
