Directed by Ariel Schulman

Nev, a 24-year-old New York-based photographer, has no idea what he's in for when Abby, an eight-year-old girl from rural Michigan, contacts him on Facebook, seeking permission to paint one of his photographs. When he receives her remarkable painting, Nev begins a friendship and correspondence with Abby's family. But things really get interesting when he develops a cyber-romance with Abby's attractive older sister, Megan, a musician and model. Prompted by some startling revelations about Megan, Nev and his buddies embark on a road trip in search of the truth.

While the concept of unfolding the story primarily over a computer screen is less innovative in the wake of the opening act of 2010's " Catfish ," as well as 2014's " Open Windows ," 2015's " Unfriended ," and 2018's " Unfriended: Dark Web ," writer-director Chaganty and co-writer Sev Ohanian use it in a natural, dramatically sound way.

Not much should be said about the film going in — it proceeds like a thriller — but it’s no spoiler to say that anyone who has seen the 2010 doc Catfish will recognize how deception is now very much a part of online activities.

A romantic thriller about an iPhone game from Catfish directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, Nerve is sharper and smarter about surveillance and social media than the latest installment of the spy franchise.

Nerve is the latest offering from Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman – and, like their earlier Catfish (2010), it explores the ways in which the internet doesn’t always promote the best in human behaviour.

Joost and Schulman previously made the documentary “ Catfish ,” another film about people who go way too far on the internet, and here they mix action and romance with social commentary about the ups and downs of living life in public online.
Franco too manages to exude both genuine confidence and vulnerability, and the energetic direction by Catfish collaborators, Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, gives the proceedings a pacey energy.
From the creators of “Catfish” and MTV’s “Catfish: The TV Show” comes “Nerve,” a phenomenally stupid techno-thriller that tries to make up for in absurdity what it lacks in everything else.

Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the directing team behind "Catfish," "Paranormal Activity 3" and "4," and the new teen-oriented cyber-thriller "Nerve," know how to affect coolness and currency without seeming to try too hard -- a rarity in Hollywood.
