“With an Evil Dead energy and a lead performance inspired by Bruce Campbell’s Ash, Dashcam ‘s video game appeal uses VFX trickery and fearless improv to create an experience akin to a wild ride at an abandoned theme park.
This time around, Savage channels the manic energy of Evil Dead and the REC series for a bloody and bizarre feast for the senses.
This trio would thrive with something akin to “The Evil Dead” considering the practical effects in “Dashcam” earn high marks, including a memorable gory decapitation.
"Dashcam" invites us to spend a full hour with one of the worst characters ever captured on a screen; a nails-on-chalkboard individual who shrieks and freestyle raps her way through a series of increasingly gruesome scenarios that owe a debt to the original "The Evil Dead."
Going from a more Paranormal Activity leaning supernatural found footage story over zoom to a madcap found footage horror comedy that feels in line with something like The Evil Dead .
It was a form once interesting and innovative and it’s produced some notable films ( The Blair Witch Project (1999), Cloverfield (2008), Megan is Missing (2011), Chronicle (2012), Host et al) but it quickly ran out of steam and ended up replacing the clichés of “ordinary” horror storytelling with a whole new batch of clichés.
That said, if you think you can take an hour and change of a MAGA online troll terrorizing and then being terrorized with effects that would make Chronicle proud, then you should keep your eyes on DASHCAM.
