After a breakup, Wes ends up at a remote rest stop. He finds himself locked inside the bathroom with a mysterious figure speaking from an adjacent stall. Soon Wes realizes he is involved in a situation more terrible than he could imagine.

It is not just that he has had a bad breakup with his girlfriend Brenda (Sylvia Grace Crim), but also that we first see him, in conversation with the unseen Brenda, in a dark empty liquid non-space not unlike the processing lair to which Scarlett Johannson’s alien lured her male victims in Jonathan Grazer’s Under The Skin (2013).
Until later when more about Wes is revealed, Glorious ‘s cosmic horror take on the death of a relationship is reminiscent of a film from 2018 called Starfish that portrays the end of a woman’s relationship as a literal apocalyptic event.
Still, it’s a satisfying and well-constructed film (despite my nitpicks about what Wes would need a toilet for) that recalls the bonkers comedy of John Dies at the End and the blood-soaked madness Ash faces in Evil Dead 2. While I overall enjoyed the movie, my major complaint is that there were times I felt Glorious was spinning me in its alternating circles too slowly.
I think the usage of the purple color palette as a denotation of cosmic horror came into prominence in Morgan Stanley’s fantastic 2019 horror film “Color Out of Space,” which again was a spin on the Lovecraftian Horror genre.
Glorious is not, for instance, Color Out of Space (2020), a tale of a foreign invasion that mutates and mutilates as it propagates.
