What critics compared The Five-Year Engagement to
The title makes the concept reasonably obvious: in the opening scene, on New Year's Eve in what we can just about assume is 2006 (a Blood Diamond joke is made), San Franciscans Tom Solomon (Segel) proposes to Violet Barnes (Emily Blunt), one year to the day after they met.
Upon giving her the engagement ring, Tom establishes that he knows how 2006's " Blood Diamond " disturbed her and reassures her that these jewels are from an older era.
The script also lacks the sense of pushing a concept to the outer limits that Rogen and co-writer Evan Goldberg pulled off so well in Superbad and This Is The End. (They are two of five credited writers, all male; the director is Nicholas Stoller, who also helmed the first Neighbors and the under-appreciated The Five-Year Engagement .)
Returning writer-director Nicholas Stoller (2012's " The Five-Year Engagement ") and co-scribes Andrew J. Cohen, Brendan O'Brien, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg appear to be going through the motions.
As a writer and director, Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Five-Year Engagement) has long been a proponent of funny women and people of color.
