But "Spread," wherein Kutcher has the role of his young life as the pleasure-giving toy of well-off women in the Hollywood Hills, comes closer to the sudsy sexuality of Beatty's "Shampoo" than any movie in, well, 34 years.
The extensive ensemble includes Josh Lucas, John Leguizamo, Michael Peña, Francis Fisher and Bryan Cranston as well as lesser known names like Margarita Levieva ("Spread," "Adventureland") doing yeoman's work as a defendant worked over on the stand.
Instead, director David Mackenzie (Starred Up, Spread), working from a script by Sicario screenwriter Taylor Sheridan , lets us discover their plan alongside the soon-to-retire Texas Ranger Marcus Hamilton (Jeff Bridges) and his long-suffering Alberto Parker (Gil Birmingham).
In movies like “Starred Up,” “Perfect Sense” and “Spread,” the fifty-year-old Scottish director has demonstrated similar acuity, finding angles both close and wide that allow actors the space to move and to find moments of truth or wit.
But this outsider's perspective is nothing new for David Mackenzie, who has worked with Ashton Kutcher and Anne Heche on a Los Angeles romance about a gigolo (2009's Spread); Ewan McGregor and Eva Green on a sci-fi story concerning a global epidemic (2011's Perfect Sense); and Ben Mendelsohn and Jack O'Connell on a father-son yarn set inside a Belfast prison (2013's Starred Up).
