As a filmmaker he embraces them (“Ordinary People,” “A River Runs Through it,” the extraordinary “Quiz Show”).
Both actors have proved recently that they can still handle more challenging work — Redford in “All Is Lost” and Nolte in the very underrated “Warrior.”
Although his performance as Katz is being compared to his superb farcical turn in Down and Out in Beverly Hills (86), it should lead viewers back to his magnificent portrayal of a recovering alcoholic in Gavin O’Connor’s Warrior (11).
After sitting in limbo for a few years, the project was finally reinvigorated with Nick Nolte (Warrior, The Prince Of Tides) stepping into the shoes of Katz.
