Afortunadamente para quienes tienen prejuicios ante este tipo de biopics que giran alrededor de personalidades “ilustres” de la política, El vicio del poder se desmarca radicalmente de la mayoría de los tópicos que caracterizan a este tipo de cine que tendría algunos de sus más destacados representantes en el Alan J. Pakula de la fundamental Todos los hombres del presidente (1976), que plasmó en la gran pantalla las consecuencias del escándalo Watergate, o, sobre todo, en el siempre polémico y visceral Oliver Stone, director que, a lo largo de su carrera, ha retratado a algunos de los más grandes líderes norteamericanos (con sus luces y sombras) mediante títulos como JFK (1991), Nixon (1995) o aquel W. (2008) protagonizado por Josh Brolin en la piel de George W. In many ways, Vice is the film that Oliver Stone attempted and failed to make in W. (2008), his too-soon take on George W. Bush.
Wight also assembled a talented, if not especially renowned, cast, including Richard Roxburgh (the sneering count who preys on Nicole Kidman in Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge!) as Frank, the dive leader, and Ioan Gruffudd (the crusading abolitionist in Amazing Grace and Tony Blair in Oliver Stone's W.) as Carl, the expedition's American financier.
Many of Stone's most memorable films have been about real people — including Nixon, W., JFK and The People vs. Larry Flynt.
While it lacks the emotional wallop or technical prowess of Stone's revered projects from the 1980s and '90s (Platoon, JFK and many more), it at least finds the controversial filmmaker shakily getting back on his feet following a post-Y2K resume that includes the disastrous likes of Alexander, W., Savages, and that Wall Street sequel with Shia LaBeouf.
