Walt Disney once complained that he didn't want to make 1950's Cinderella because he worried having another princess film after Snow White—released thirteen years prior—would make it seem like the company was running out of ideas.
There is a superficial resemblance here to Neil Gaiman’s novella Stardust, but really the origins of the story are fairly obvious: the events are initiated by a character wishing on a star.

Writers Jennifer Lee ("Frozen") and Allison Moore delve into Disney history for the studio's latest animation, taking inspiration from the famous “Pinocchio” theme song, “Sleeping Beauty's” vain villain Maleficent and a long line of animal sidekicks, while also catering to its more recent, inclusive works and the result is neither here nor there, a forgettable rehashed mishmash.
…the film’s main theme ‘This Wish‘ is certainly a catchy affair enough almost to rival ‘Let It Go’ from the first Frozen, a song we parents have grown to loath over the last ten years, but Frozen, alas, this is not.
Director Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn—working from a screenplay by Frozen's Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore—admirably try to do something different.

If a benevolent monarch worshiped by his people sounds a little last century, you’re getting ahead of the movie. Wish’s creative team includes co-director Chris Buck and co-writer Jennifer Lee, two of the people responsible for the Frozens and their faintly progressive tweaks to Disney Princess protocol.
Its story, scripted by Frozen’s Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore, is a spin-off film – of sorts – for the wishing star that every Disney princess, puppet, mermaid, street rat and Greek demigod has gazed up at and sang of their heart’s desire.
