What critics compared Sex Appeal to
The screenplay itself makes direct reference to The 40-Year-Old Virgin , 10 Things I Hate About You , American Pie and a scattering of ’80s sex-coms.
At one point, Avery lifts her shirt for him in the sightline of half-dozen other students, and shows no understanding of their shocked reactions, apparently believing that reenacting a scene from 10 Things I Hate About You is entirely normal behavior.
Blockers, from 2018, was groundbreaking in this regard and was followed by Booksmart the next year.
