While previous Van Groeningen efforts like 2012’s emotionally devastating The Broken Circle Breakdown and 2009’s look at familial alcoholism, The Misfortunates, were stunning directorial achievements that boasted strong authorial voices, Beautiful Boy is the type of atonal trainwreck that feels like it’s been pieced together via a Deep Dream generator.
In adapting the twin memoirs of David Sheff and his son, Nic, Belgian director Felix van Groeningen (“The Misfortunates”) oscillates between Nic’s (Chalamet) periods of addiction and recovery.
It’s directed in a non-linear way by the Belgian auteur Felix Van Groeningen (“The Broken Circle Breakdown”/”The Misfortunates”) and is co-written in a schematic way by the director and Luke Davies (a former heroin user).
