What critics compared The Trip to Greece to
One is that perhaps Winterbottom and Coogan were inspired by the beauty of Greece while filming their recent and largely misfired satire “Greed.”
As a quick and rather depressing reminder of Steve's self-centered personality, the two have a chance encounter with Kareem Alkabbani, who appeared as a refugee in a movie in which Steve recently starred (The movie is Greed, by the way, which was also directed by Winterbottom).
Certain British cultural references fly by without explanation, and a brief detour involving Turkish refugees makes more sense for people who’ve seen the recent Winterbottom/Coogan collaboration Greed , but the plot moves so nimbly that another bit of eye and/or ear candy is moments away.
Personally, I hope Steve Coogan one day wins an Oscar and director Michael Winterbottom (who coincidentally has already worked with the actor on one partly Roman-themed film this year already, Greed) decides to do another one of these so instead of gloating about winning 7 BAFTAs, he can talk about his Academy Award.
This is the fourth and final jokey fictionalized trip film from Brit filmmaker Michael Winterbottom (“Greed”/”The Wedding Guest “), which like the others has been edited from a season television series and like the others the men are on a writing assignment about the trip from The Observer.
