Also concerned in the furore were The Devils and two films attacked for allegedly glorifying fascistic vigilante heroes, The French Connection and Dirty Harry.
It brought graphic violence to the screen—as did Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange and Ken Russell’s The Devils, which were from the same year—in a way that shocked and horrified viewers.
Director Rod Lurie (the “Straw Dogs” remake) fills the screen with intertitles — helpfully identifying every soldier by name, annoyingly stating the obvious “Landing Zone” and “Command Post” and “Barracks.”

If “Da 5 Bloods” attempts to put a human face on soldier, citizen and foe, “The Outpost” — based on the nonfiction book by CNN host Jake Tapper and directed in a rush of adrenaline by Rod Lurie (“The Last Castle,” the “Straw Dogs” remake) — is an old-fashioned good guy-bad guy riff that doesn’t pose many questions about why the American fighters are there in the first place.
Director Rod Lurie (The Contender, Straw Dogs) offers an unflinching portrayal of soldiers in combat.
