What critics compared Machete to
The violence "Copshop" offers up is pretty standard exploitation film material, like what you'd see in "Hobo With a Shotgun" or "Machete."
Like that earlier film, “Drive Angry” is grind house gibberish through and through but unlike such things as “Shoot Em Up” or “Machete,” similar efforts that spent so much time showing how hip and ironic they were that they forgot to be entertaining as well, it serves up its sleazy thrills with any quotation marks to speak off--though it was presumably made on a budget far larger than any of its genre antecedents could have hoped for, there really isn’t anything in it that could not have been seen unspooling on the screen of the late, great Woods Theatre in downtown Chicago during its days when the fights in the audience were usually better than the ones on the screen.
If nothing, it's just as jovial in spirit as 2010's " Machete ."
DA3D is an over-the-top, supernatural action-gore epic that aims for the same type of frenzied vibe as last year’s Machete , but instead of slashing blades, it goes heavy on the bullets.
But whereas the recent Machete managed to both pay homage to its celluloid ancestors while emerging as an entertaining movie in its own right, this one ultimately proves to be a drag, getting off to a gleeful start before losing its way.
It’s jet-black hard-boiled revenge, story-wise not dissimilar to junky genre fare: They Call Her One Eye (1974), Harry Brown (2009), Machete (2010) etcetera, but the key difference is tonal.
Like Rodriguez’s “Machete,” it stays true to its roots — films like the 1986 “Dead-End Drive-In” — in its feature-length version.
