What critics compared Frozen River to
Like “Frozen River,” the perceptive authenticity rings true despite the low budget.
There is also something resonant about "Winter's Bone" that make it more than just this year's "Frozen River."
(The situation, environment and hardscrabble realism are among many elements that connect "Winter's Bone" to "Frozen River," written and directed by native Memphian Courtney Hunt; in fact, "Bone" won the Grand Jury Award for drama at this year's Sundance Film Festival, the same prize collected by "River" in 2008.)

This film is reminiscent of 2008's Frozen River, the family matriarch bent on protecting her family in the dead of winter while contending with criminal elements.
As I wrote in my review of the 2009 film, the original “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” did for Sweden what “Insomnia” did for Alaska and “Frozen River” did for the remote areas of New York that border Canada.
Rent “Frozen River” or “Winter’s Bone” and catch the contrast.
Krokidas and director of photography Reed Morano ("Frozen River") give the film the flavor of its time period while also incorporating more modern tricks - scenes replayed in reverse, a jazz club's patrons frozen as Ginsberg and Carr explore.
