What critics compared Saw IV to
Saw IV marks the first installment within the ongoing series that's almost devoid of similarities to the stellar original, as the movie generally places the emphasis on entirely uninteresting characters and surprisingly tedious sequences of gore.
Jigsaw may finally be dead, but Tobin Bell graces Saw IV with his presence quite a bit—via flashbacks.
One could argue the same of the first two "Saw" sequels, but this new installment is the worst of the successful franchise.
But hey, they’ve sold out everything else that made the first movie so unique, so their latest steps to continue pumping out “Saw” movies should come as no surprise.
There’s also the return of Eric (Donnie Wahlberg), thought dead in "Saw II."
Not only does Saw IV repeat (with a few variations) what has come before, but it does so without the involvement of the main villain, Jigaw (Tobin Bell), who died at the end of Saw III.
Director Darren Lynn Bousman has been at the helm of the franchise since "Saw II," and his attention here focuses solely on moving the story along, leaving no room for notable performances or for the characters to reason or surprise us with their next move.
