Garage (2007)

Due to a learning disability, Josie's life in a tiny town revolves around a menial job taking care of a garage that could close at any day. Things start to change, however, when David, the son of his boss' girlfriend, comes to work with him. Josie hangs out with David and his teenage friends, bringing them beer, and despite being a grown man himself, finds that the new company lifts his spirits. But his simple-mindedness blinds him to some potential legal dangers.

What critics compared Garage to

Abrahamson, an Irish independent filmmaker whose very previous movies (“Frank,” “Garage”) struck a nice balance of humanist storytelling and austerely elegant visuals, pulls off some of his most striking effects here through compositional skill alone (which at times makes Stephen Rennicks’ score feel over-insistent by comparison).

It is, then, exactly the collaboration one might have expected from Abrahamson, the Irish humanist noted for such modestly scaled, emotionally rich character studies as “Garage” and “What Richard Did,” and Jon Ronson, the wonky Welsh humourist whose work last reached the screen in “The Men Who Stare at Goats” – if one were to imagine anything at all from those paired sensibilities.
Luckily, helmer Lenny Abrahamson (“Garage,” “Adam & Paul”) puts the pic’s eccentricity to good use, luring in skeptics with jokey surrealism and delivering them to a profoundly moving place.
Comedy is often tragedy with a twist, and director Lenny Abrahamson (“Garage”) demonstrates that dynamic, assisted by Jon Ronson and Peter Straughan’s sharp, sensitive screenplay.
That’s the unlikely conceit imagined in Frank , a new film opening next week, directed by Lenny Abrahamson ( What Richard Did , 12; Garage , 07) and co-written by Ronson and Peter Straughan.
