What critics compared A Mighty Heart to
In addition to directing hysterically funny films, Michael Winterbottom, also directed a terribly serious film, "A Mighty Heart."
It’s as if Winterbottom is trying to make a Ken Loach-style social commentary crossed with one of his The Trip films (which also just so happen to star Coogan) mixed with one of his more serious fact-based melodramas like A Mighty Heart or Welcome to Sarajevo .
Winterbottom (“Welcome to Sarajevo,” “A Mighty Heart” and “The Trip” movies with Coogan and Rob Brydon) tells us the tale of McReadie’s “Greed” via his plans for an epic 60th birthday celebration.
At times a meandering docu-drama, a soft satire, and an expose on, well, greed, Winterbottom’s signature breezy style – so well suited to projects such as The Trip or A Mighty Heart – doesn’t quite manage to muster the emotional resonance it seems to be going for.
That’s a good question to chew on in this age of neofactualist movies (think A Mighty Heart , The Road to Guantanamo , Green Zone ), and if a narrative film can be journalism, Zero Dark Thirty is the film that proves it.
The mutilation takes place offscreen, but its effects are fully felt; Maleficent’s heartrending reaction recalls Jolie’s cry of anguish as Mariane Pearl in A Mighty Heart.
Jolie’s performance here is particularly powerful (her grief-stricken cry looks just like the one she emitted as Daniel Pearl’s widow in A Mighty Heart), and it pushes the movie into a dark place that edges it well out of traditional “children’s film” territory and into the realm of the truly Grimm.
