Directed by James Mangold (“3:10 to Yuma”), from a script by Mark Bomback (the “Total Recall” remake) and Scott Frank (“Marley & Me”), “The Wolverine” is based on a legendary 1980s story arc by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller.
Those two elements are gracefully woven together by screenwriters Mark Bomback (“Live Free or Die Hard”) and Scott Frank (“Marley & Me”) when Wolverine becomes involved with granddaughter Mariko (Tao Okamoto), a target of the yakuza and others after her granddad dies.
As Gloria, Joyce Van Patten (2008's " Marley & Me ") is a good sport with a warm, sweet aura.
If the cute canine in “Marley & Me” died at the beginning of the film instead of the end, and his owner grieved with a stockpile of Glocks, sniper rifles and machine guns, you’d have a movie like “John Wick.”
Her parting gift to him was an adorably yippy little beagle, and the swiftly-edited opening reel suggests a Marley & Me redux in which things are about to go horribly wrong.

Unlike Marley & Me or Old Yeller , the latter of which is the far superior motion picture even if both tend to get mentioned in the same sentence, the dog at the center of all this fantastical melodrama doesn’t meet its end in some climactic way designed to resolve the story and tug at the heartstrings.
This is a sort of loosely Buddhist Marley & Me .

At one point, I expected the dog from “Marley & Me” to wander in just to go paws up.
It’s hard to remember the last time a canine was made so shamelessly pivotal a character in a mainstream movie (“Marley & Me,” perhaps), but “The Drop” is at once upfront and highly effective in its manipulations, tugging at our heartstrings even as it flicks away at our nerves.
