Having cut his teeth on the socio-political themes of Tsotsi and Rendition , Gavin Hood knows that the real interest here lies not in the futuristic sci-fi spectacle (which is handled efficiently) but in the more contemporary issues of virtual violence, and jaw-jaw versus war-war.
That tale has now been brought to the big screen by writer/director Gavin Hood ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine," "Rendition") who has cast Asa Butterfield (who played the title character in "Hugo") as his protagonist.
While it fails to impart the same level of emotional impact as its source novel, director Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Rendition) has a no-nonsense approach that refuses to condescend to a young audience by whitewashing matters of war, politics, or the training of young children to become soldiers.
Born and bred in South Africa, Hood won but did not earn an Oscar for the social drama Tsotsi, then directed the somnolent political film Rendition and the non-whelming X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
The director, Gavin Hood (“Rendition”), has mastered a standard vocabulary of digital effects, including the inescapable scene of men crashing through a window, and has added faintly ridiculous new feats, such as Jackman’s leaping onto an airborne helicopter and shearing off the blades with the cutlery springing from his fists.
Expertly directed by Gavin Hood, who made his name with headier fare like Tsotsi and Rendition , the movie has a plot that moves briskly, and even constructs something like a coherent fictional universe around the loud (and occasionally breathtaking) set pieces.
Written by novelist David Benioff and Skip Woods, Wolverine was directed by Gavin Hood, a South African who earlier made two exercises in political solemnity, Tsotsi and Rendition.
But Hood, who previously directed two serious dramas, the 2007 " Rendition " and the 2006 " Tsotsi ," doesn't seem to think that matters much.
To me it felt like Ratner was just trying to copy the blueprint that was created by Singer, but director Gavin Hood (“Rendition” and the 2005 Academy Award-winning “Tsotsi”) has given his motion picture a whole new flavor.
