A reclusive telemarketer has only one semblance of a friend: His telecommuter boss. But the telemarketer's social circle seems to improve greatly when a whimsical co-worker enters his life. Only, as he begins to sketch his new friend's portrait, disturbing "voices" from the phone man's past threaten to lead him into a network of destruction.

What critics compared Spiral to
From the broadly comedic and appropriately gory slasher Hatchet to the taut, complex psychological thriller Spiral to the equally dramatic and horrific minimalism of Frozen, he shows off an ever-increasing skill set that encompasses an ability to handle both intricate and challenging camerawork as well as richly detailed and relatable characterizations.
I was not gaga over his slasher throwback “Hatchet,” but I was entertained immensely by his murder mystery “Spiral,” and somewhere between those movies he found the middle ground to make a movie that’s something of a horror film based around natural inconvenience.
It’s a ballsy move for Green, who doesn’t strike me as the sincere type, previously directing the snoozer slasher/laugher picture “Hatchet” and the harebrained chiller “Spiral.”
