What critics compared Space Chimps to
The DreamWorks film, from writer/directors Chris Sanders ("How to Train Your Dragon," "Lilo & Stitch") and Kirk Di Micco ("Space Chimps"), features a starry voice cast in Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener, Cloris Leachman and Clark Duke, and an appropriately high concept: the Croods are a family of cavemen who have to evolve suddenly when faced with cataclysmic natural disasters and the arrival of a young Homo Sapiens with the ability to make fire.
And so thereby we solve a small mystery, which had been: What happens when you pair up the writer and director of the dire Space Chimps -- that would be Kirk De Micco -- with Chris Sanders, the writer and director of the glorious How to Train Your Dragon and Lilo & Stitch ?
Written and co-directed by Chris Sanders ("How to Train Your Dragon") and Kirk De Micco ("Space Chimps"), it features the voice of Cage as the titular cave-clan's pater familia, a knuckle-dragger named Grug who is convinced that the only way to keep his family safe is to keep them locked up in their cave as much as sub-humanly possible.
Sanders’ usual partner, Dean DeBlois, had been replaced by Kirk De Micco — a guy whose only prior directorial credit was the fairly egregious Space Chimps (2008) — and its trailer was flat.
Co-writers/directors Kirk De Micco ("Space Chimps") and Chris Sanders ("How to Train Your Dragon") make sure to mix in plenty of action, a few moments of peril and plenty of comedy bits (slapstick style, animal sidekick related, and some fun, Flintstone-esque prehistoric inventions) to keep the overall feeling energetic and buoyant.
It’s as if co-directors Chris Sanders (the fabulous-looking How to Train Your Dragon, the very likable Lilo & Stitch) and Kirk De Micco (the execrable Space Chimps) are trying so hard to overcompensate for what they know is the thinnest part of their movie.
