Squeezed by the economy, high school physics teacher Brendan Conlon (Joel Edgerton, "The Square," "Animal Kingdom"), a former middling UFC contender, convinces Frank Campana (Frank Grillo, "Pride and Glory") to train him for Sparta, a 16 round Mixed Martial Arts competition for the world's best fighters.
Directed by Gavin O'Connor ( Miracle , Pride and Glory ) and featuring three of the best performances we're likely to see in theaters this year, Warrior avoids most sports movie cliches and delivers a powerful one-two punch of heart-wrenching drama and some of the most astounding fight sequences on film (although to be honest I watched many of them through the slits between my fingers as they were incredibly, realistically brutal).
Director Gavin O'Connor displayed similar respect for characterization in the true-life hockey film Miracle, and the cop drama Pride and Glory.
Cowriter (with Cliff Dorfman of 2005's Entourage and Anthony Tambakis)/director Gavin O'Connor ("Miracle," "Pride and Glory") also takes a story credit with Dorfman for what essentially plays like a ludicrous mashup of the dysfunctional family of "The Fighter" and the entire Rocky series.
Ramon Rodriguez (2008's " Pride and Glory ") is beyond annoying as Sam's college roommate Leo, who tags along for the running time's duration, much to the chagrin of the viewer's sanity.
