A story about a troubled boy growing up in England, set in 1983. He comes across a few skinheads on his way home from school, after a fight. They become his new best friends, even like family. Based on experiences of director Shane Meadows.

What critics compared This Is England to
Hill has noted that he was inspired by harsher pics like Larry Clark’s Kids (scripted by Harmony Korine) and Shane Meadows’ This Is England , and the non-judgmental perspectives of those films are carried over here, meaning that we watch uncritically as a bunch of uncomfortably young lads get up to all sorts of particularly LA-type mischief.
If anything, the heart of the film strikes closer to Elephant, where every moment is captured in rapid fire constant motion (not to mention both films feature cinematographer Christopher Blauvelt), or This is England, where the cast comes across as a random group of people rather than a gaggle of well trained actors.
Hill has spoken of the influence of both Shane Meadows’ This Is England and largely forgotten kids flick The Sandlot Kids as his inspiration.
Cinematographer Danny Cohen, who did such magical work on This Is England and London Road, explores this forbidding world with a child’s openness.
It is the work of a highly talented group of artists who might be regarded as British realists – Tom Hooper directed the soccer epic The Damned United ; Eve Stewart was production designer on Mike Leigh's Topsy-Turvy and Vera Drake ; Jenny Beavan was responsible for the costumes worn in Gosford Park and The Remains of the Day ; the cinematographer Danny Cohen lit Shane Meadows's This is England and Dead Man's Shoes ; Tariq Anwar's editing credits range from The Madness of King George to American Beauty ; and the screenplay is by the British writer David Seidler, who co-wrote Coppola's Tucker: The Man and His Dream .
